DESCRIPTION:Event: \nCommunity square dances are attended by young and old\, couples and singles\, and anyone interested in getting out\, moving\, listening to live music\, and enjoying fellowship with others in the community.  Beginners are welcome\, and all dances are taught. \nWe invite people of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy an oral tradition passed down for hundreds of years. The Hickory Music Factory’s “Old Time String Band” and a dance caller will lead you throughout the evening. We will primarily draw upon the traditional social dances of America. \nJourney into the past and learn square dances\, step dances\, reels\, and other dance forms practiced in Southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances are the culmination of the many heritages that settled in this region. Folk dancing today is built on the European\, African American\, and Native American traditions of our past\, but they are very much alive in the present. \nYou can help bring them to life by attending this inter-generational dance. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All ages are welcome\, and no experience is necessary.

DESCRIPTION:Event: \nExplore historic cooking methods\, learn to interpret 18th century receipts (recipes)\, and enjoy the deliciousness of foodways history in this all-day class. Use the beautiful Hart Tavern hearth to cook a holiday feast over open fire\, using tools and equipment that were common in the 18th century. Join us as we roast a “goose\,” (in this case a large chicken)\, make several of our favorite seasonal side dishes\, prepare pumpkins and apples to make our favorite holiday treats\, and more. \nThis is a hands-on class\, so please bring a notebook\, writing utensil\,  and your favorite apron. Wear comfortable\, natural fiber (cotton\, linen\, wool\, etc) clothes that cover your legs and closed-toed shoes. Skirts are not recommended attire for this class. If you wear a skirt\, please make sure it is made of natural or cellulose-based fibers that do not melt. You will be working next to an open fire\, so we want everyone to be safe. \n*Must be 13 or older to register; students under 16 must  be accompanied by an adult.

Place items in either end of the bag\, twist it in the middle\, and you have two bags in one that easily balance on your shoulder. Learn to do running stitch\, backstitch\, felled seams\, and a narrow hem. \nMaterials will be provided to make a historically accurate wallet. If you’d like to make a colorful\, modern version instead\, bring 1 yard of 100% cotton quilting fabric or medium-weight linen and matching thread. While this is a great beginner hand sewing project\, the instructor will have a sewing machine available and participants are welcome to bring their own sewing machine if they wish. \nAges 13+\, minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Bring all your questions ranging from permaculture design\, plant selection\, current yard conundrums\, and more! This class is designed for adults but children 14 and older are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. Each class participant will go home with their very own starter bundle of food forest plants! \nPlant bundles will include\, but not limited to an elderberry bush\, yarrow\, native mountain mint\, and the amazing bog sage!

Most people carried emergency tools and materials in what was known as a “housewife\,” or “hussif.” These sewing kits varied immensely\, from a highly decorated version a woman might keep in her tie-in pocket\, to the simple and sturdy soldier’s kit that became general issue during the Civil War\, with many variations in between. “Housewives” remained popular well into the 20th century. \nBasic sewing knowledge will be helpful\, but no hand-sewing will be required. Two sewing machines will be available to share; feel free to bring your own. For experienced sewists wanting a more historically-accurate look\, hand-sewing guidance will be provided. Vintage-looking snips of the perfect size will be available for purchase for $5.

SUMMARY:Community Square Dance
DESCRIPTION:Event: \nCommunity square dances are attended by young and old\, couples and singles\, and anyone interested in getting out\, moving\, listening to live music\, and enjoying fellowship with others in the community.  Beginners are welcome\, and all dances are taught. \nWe invite people of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy an oral tradition passed down for hundreds of years. The Hickory Music Factory’s “Old Time String Band” and a dance caller will lead you throughout the evening. We will primarily draw upon the traditional social dances of America. \nJourney into the past and learn square dances\, step dances\, reels\, and other dance forms practiced in Southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances are the culmination of the many heritages that settled in this region. Folk dancing today is built on the European\, African American\, and Native American traditions of our past\, but they are very much alive in the present. \nYou can help bring them to life by attending this inter-generational dance. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All ages are welcome\, and no experience is necessary.

DESCRIPTION:Event: \nTo enter Hart Square Village on festival day is to enter the early 1800s. Hart Square bustles with over three hundred knowledgeable artisans and historic demonstrators dressed in period clothing. Our artisans truly bring the village to life by sharing the craftsmanship and subsistence of Carolina’s pioneers. Visitors will witness everything from flax making\, cotton baling\, and tinsmithing to apple butter making and the sweet sounds of old-time music. Hart Square Village is the nation’s largest collection of historic log structures. On festival day\, all 103 historic structures will be open! North Carolina artist Bob Timberlake says\, “I’ve visited Colonial Williamsburg\, almost grew up in Old Salem\, and I’ve seen other restored places all over North America\, and nothing compares with Hart Square Village just south of Hickory.” We boast the most talented and authentic demonstrators in the country and know you will agree with us when you join us at the 40th Heritage Festival.
