SUMMARY:Community Square Dance
DESCRIPTION:Community square dances are attended by young and old\, couples and singles\, and anyone interested in getting out\, moving\, listening to live music\, and enjoying fellowship with others in the community.  Beginners are welcome\, and all dances are taught. \nWe invite people of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy an oral tradition passed down for hundreds of years. The Hickory Music Factory’s “Old Time String Band” and a dance caller will lead you throughout the evening. We will primarily draw upon the traditional social dances of America. \nJourney into the past and learn square dances\, step dances\, reels\, and other dance forms practiced in Southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances are the culmination of the many heritages that settled in this region. Folk dancing today is built on the European\, African American\, and Native American traditions of our past\, but they are very much alive in the present. \nYou can help bring them to life by attending this inter-generational dance. Children must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Vintage Sewing Kit Making Class
DESCRIPTION:In the 18th century\, both men and women often carried small fabric kits to keep sewing materials handy for domestic projects and inevitable necessary repairs on clothing. Useful and beautiful\, these sewing kits continued in popularity into the mid-20th century. \nAll materials will be prepared for participants to make their own sewing kit. Remaining examples of historical versions show a great diversity in design\, and you will have the opportunity to customize yours\, as well\, through fabric choices and personalized inclusions based on your needs and style preferences.  Each kit will also include a needle\, needle-threader\, basic thread colors on wooden spools\, and an assortment of pins. Small\, historically-inspired scissors will be available for $5. \nA basic knowledge of sewing is all that’s required to make this kit by hand\, however the instructor will have a sewing machine available to use for the sake of speed and ease. Participants can also feel free to bring their own machine\, as well.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make a historical carry-all and the best grocery bag you’ll ever have! This tote style is modeled after the common\, historical “Market Wallet” of the 1600-1800’s. These bags are rectangular with a central opening and can be made by hand or with a machine. \nThis class is perfect for those who have a machine and want to learn how to use the two most common stitches for beginner projects. By making this bag\, you will gain experience with sewing straight seams\, finishing seams\, and top stitching. \nA basic knowledge of hand-sewing is enough to construct this bag without a machine. You can make a historically-accurate market-wallet\, suitable for living history events\, by using a running stitch and backstitch.  The instructor will demonstrate period-correct felled seams\, French seams\, and how to do a narrow “rolled” hem by hand. \nMaterials will be provided to make a historically accurate wallet in linen. If you’d like to make a colorful\, modern version instead\, bring 1-2 yards of 100% cotton quilting fabric or medium-weight linen and matching thread. Again\, while this is a great beginner hand sewing project\, the instructor will have a sewing machine available and participants are welcome to bring their own sewing machine if they wish.

DESCRIPTION:Paint your own quilt square! Now sewing is necessary. \nEach student will be taking home a completed 2×2 ft barn quilt square. You will have nine samples to choose from\, and you will be drawing your design. Each person will have the opportunity to learn the entire process of painting and designing a barn quilt. We have approximately 100 different colors to choose from\, and we will be taping the lines to achieve a clean\, sound design. All paints are water-based\, and everything we use is suitable for outdoors—weatherproof boards and paint.

Cordials and liqueurs start with a base of alcohol or apple cider vinegar and are infused with herbs\, fruit\, roots\, seeds\, spices\, and raw honey. The addition of fruit\, herbs\, and natural sweeteners turns neutral alcohol into a delectable spirit. We will craft several cordial infusions to take home\, ready for you to add liquor. We will also learn methods and techniques so you can continue to craft your own unique flavors.

We will endeavor to tie at least three brooms — a whisk\, a cake tester/pot scrubber\, and an Appalachian style broom called the “Turkey Wing.” Along the way\, we’ll celebrate the universal practice of broom-making and have fun learning a new skill that you can use to make useful objects for your self\, as well as gifts for others! \nPlease note: some upper body strength is required (wrists\, forearms\, shoulders).
