DESCRIPTION:In the 18th century\, both men and women often carried small fabric kits to keep sewing materials handy for domestic projects and inevitable necessary repairs on clothing. Useful and beautiful\, these sewing kits continued in popularity into the mid-20th century. \nAll materials will be prepared for participants to make their own sewing kit. Remaining examples of historical versions show a great diversity in design\, and you will have the opportunity to customize yours\, as well\, through fabric choices and personalized inclusions based on your needs and style preferences.  Each kit will also include a needle\, needle-threader\, basic thread colors on wooden spools\, and an assortment of pins. Small\, historically-inspired scissors will be available for $5. \nA basic knowledge of sewing is all that’s required to make this kit by hand\, however the instructor will have a sewing machine available to use for the sake of speed and ease. Participants can also feel free to bring their own machine\, as well.

DESCRIPTION:Paint your own quilt square! Now sewing is necessary. \nEach student will be taking home a completed 2×2 ft barn quilt square. You will have nine samples to choose from\, and you will be drawing your design. Each person will have the opportunity to learn the entire process of painting and designing a barn quilt. We have approximately 100 different colors to choose from\, and we will be taping the lines to achieve a clean\, sound design. All paints are water-based\, and everything we use is suitable for outdoors—weatherproof boards and paint.

DESCRIPTION:Event: \nExplore historic cooking methods\, learn to interpret 18th century receipts (recipes)\, and enjoy the deliciousness of foodways history in this all-day class. Use the beautiful Hart Tavern hearth to cook a holiday feast over open fire\, using tools and equipment that were common in the 18th century. Join us as we roast a “goose\,” (in this case a large chicken)\, make several of our favorite seasonal side dishes\, prepare pumpkins and apples to make our favorite holiday treats\, and more. \nThis is a hands-on class\, so please bring a notebook\, writing utensil\,  and your favorite apron. Wear comfortable\, natural fiber (cotton\, linen\, wool\, etc) clothes that cover your legs and closed-toed shoes. Skirts are not recommended attire for this class. If you wear a skirt\, please make sure it is made of natural or cellulose-based fibers that do not melt. You will be working next to an open fire\, so we want everyone to be safe. \n*Must be 13 or older to register; students under 16 must  be accompanied by an adult.

DESCRIPTION:Event: \nLearn how to make a historical carry-all and the best grocery bag you’ll ever have! Known as “wallets” in the 18th century\, these bags are rectangular with a central opening. Place items in either end of the bag\, twist it in the middle\, and you have two bags in one that easily balance on your shoulder. Learn to do running stitch\, backstitch\, felled seams\, and a narrow hem. \nMaterials will be provided to make a historically accurate wallet. If you’d like to make a colorful\, modern version instead\, bring 1 yard of 100% cotton quilting fabric or medium-weight linen and matching thread. While this is a great beginner hand sewing project\, the instructor will have a sewing machine available and participants are welcome to bring their own sewing machine if they wish. \nAges 13+\, minors must be accompanied by an adult.
