Chair Caning Class – Chairs

Step back in time and learn the early Appalachian craft of “bottoming chairs.” In this 4-hour hands-on class, participants will learn step by step how to weave a herringbone pattern with reed to create a chair seat.

Materials will be provided, and a chair frame will be available for each student. Participants may also bring their own standard chair frame, measuring approximately 14.5 inches front to back and 17.5 inches at the widest part of the seat.

The class is taught by Jim Ross and Harriet Smith, who share a passion for preserving traditional crafts and history through their work at Hart Square and other living history events.

Taking the Caroline stool caning class first is recommended but not required.
