DESCRIPTION:Learn the ancient tradition of paper-making! Millenia old in China and Europe\, the first American paper mill was established in 1690 in Pennsylvania. Learn how this eco-friendly craft can help us “upcycle” used paper products\, and even fabric\, to create one-of-a-kind art pieces. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll participate in the process of making paper pulp and straining it through a deckle to create unique hand-made paper. You’ll come home with your own sheets that can be used for card-making\, crafts\, and correspondence! The instructor will also demonstrate “pulp painting\,” a way you can customize your paper by adding color and pattern before a sheet is complete. Dried flowers\, metallic threads\, and other add-ins will be on hand… feel free to bring your own contributions for a truly special piece. \n\nApron or smock recommended.

DESCRIPTION:Event: \nLake Hickory Shag Club was organized in March 1987 by Ann Sigmon and Jim Dingler. Both were lovers of shag dancing and wanted to share this love and experience with others in the Hickory area. Since then\, shaggers and “beginning” shaggers have gathered at the VFW in Hickory\, NC\, home of the club\, for dancing and fellowship. Membership has averaged around 100 people each year for the past several years.

SUMMARY:Community Square Dance
DESCRIPTION:Community square dances are attended by young and old\, couples and singles\, and anyone interested in getting out\, moving\, listening to live music\, and enjoying fellowship with others in the community.  Beginners are welcome\, and all dances are taught. \nWe invite people of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy an oral tradition passed down for hundreds of years. The Hickory Music Factory’s “Old Time String Band” and a dance caller will lead you throughout the evening. We will primarily draw upon the traditional social dances of America. \nJourney into the past and learn square dances\, step dances\, reels\, and other dance forms practiced in Southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances are the culmination of the many heritages that settled in this region. Folk dancing today is built on the European\, African American\, and Native American traditions of our past\, but they are very much alive in the present. \nYou can help bring them to life by attending this inter-generational dance. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
