Both were lovers of shag dancing and wanted to share this love and experience with others in the Hickory area. DESCRIPTION:Community square dances are attended by young and old\, couples and singles\, and anyone interested in getting out\, moving\, listening to live music\, and enjoying fellowship with others in the community.  Beginners are welcome\, and all dances are taught. \nWe invite people of all backgrounds and ages to enjoy an oral tradition passed down for hundreds of years. The Hickory Music Factory’s “Old Time String Band” and a dance caller will lead you throughout the evening. We will primarily draw upon the traditional social dances of America. \nJourney into the past and learn square dances\, step dances\, reels\, and other dance forms practiced in Southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances are the culmination of the many heritages that settled in this region. Folk dancing today is built on the European\, African American\, and Native American traditions of our past\, but they are very much alive in the present. \nYou can help bring them to life by attending this inter-generational dance. Children must be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:“Abstract painting is abstract — it confronts you.”\, Jackson Pollock was the first American abstract painter to be taken seriously in Europe. He was also one of the most influential and controversial painters of the twentieth century. He was also an alcoholic with a quick temper and quick fists — he once said “The problem isn’t painting; it’s what to do when you aren’t painting.” \nA major figure in the abstract expressionist movement he was widely noticed for his “drip technique” which was also called all-over painting or action painting. His extreme form of abstraction divided the art critics: some praised the immediacy of his creations\, while others derided the random effects he achieved. \nWe will delve into his reclusive and volatile personality while taking a close look at the progression of his work and ultimately why he is considered an artist of such stature and high regard in our century. \nPresenter Carl Shatley is an accomplished educator\, lecturer and artist who holds a Master of Arts degree in History from Duke University and Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Greensboro College. Both were lovers of shag dancing and wanted to share this love and experience with others in the Hickory area. Since then\, shaggers and “beginning” shaggers have gathered at the VFW in Hickory\, NC\, home of the club\, for dancing and fellowship. Membership has averaged around 100 people each year for the past several years.

DESCRIPTION:$65; $50 Members (3 Classes Included) \nHMA on the GO: The temporary location of our Figure Painting Studio will be at Old Rock School in Valdese\, NC (400 Main St W\, Valdese\, NC 28690). \nFigure painting is an opportunity for artists to work with a live model. This is a recurring class offered in 3-week blocks. Participants bring their choice of materials to work with. The model holds the same position for 3 hours with several breaks. There is no instruction however guidance is available. All ability levels are welcome. We are unable to pro-rate our Figure Painting Studio.

SUMMARY:Vintage Sewing Kit Making Class
DESCRIPTION:In the 18th century\, both men and women often carried small fabric kits to keep sewing materials handy for domestic projects and inevitable necessary repairs on clothing. Useful and beautiful\, these sewing kits continued in popularity into the mid-20th century. \nAll materials will be prepared for participants to make their own sewing kit. Remaining examples of historical versions show a great diversity in design\, and you will have the opportunity to customize yours\, as well\, through fabric choices and personalized inclusions based on your needs and style preferences.  Each kit will also include a needle\, needle-threader\, basic thread colors on wooden spools\, and an assortment of pins. Small\, historically-inspired scissors will be available for $5. \nA basic knowledge of sewing is all that’s required to make this kit by hand\, however the instructor will have a sewing machine available to use for the sake of speed and ease. Participants can also feel free to bring their own machine\, as well.
