For more than 20 years, The Green Room staged performances in rented spaces, including the Newton-Conover Auditorium. However, as productions and educational programs expanded, the need for a permanent home became clear. In 2008, the board of directors launched a capital campaign to secure a dedicated space. Thanks to significant contributions from Bob and Michele McCreary and other community supporters, the historic Newton Post Office on the 1924 Courthouse Square was purchased and renovated into a state-of-the-art theatre facility. The newly named Old Post Office Playhouse officially opened its doors on Oct. 8, 2010, with a production of “The King and I.” The move marked a turning point, allowing The Green Room to increase its programming, build its educational initiatives, and establish itself as a cultural anchor in the community.
